How to apply for the Master Media Studies
As of 1 October you can register for this programme. You need to start in Studielink, which is the Dutch national registration system for higher education. Subsequently,
you continue your application in the Admission Portal of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR).
After you have submitted your application, the programme’s admission committee will assess your request for admission. The processing of your application will take approximately eight weeks. You will be informed about the outcome by email. Once you are admitted, you can finalise your registration. On the pages below, you will find information about the different steps you need to take to apply and enrol for a Master in Media Studies.

- Dutch students need their DigiD to log in on Studielink. (Non-Dutch students can log in on Studielink right away.)
- If you have not yet taken an English language test, you will be asked to fill in your planned test date. You can choose either IELTS academicOpens external or TOEFLOpens external.

Copy of your Bachelor's degree certificate
If you have not obtained your Bachelor diploma yet, we will consider your application anyhow. However, any offer made to you will be conditional. You will be allowed to submit your diploma (or graduation statement) later, ultimately 10 August.
- Translation of your diploma in English if the original is not in Dutch, English, French or German.
- Recent official transcript of records stating all your grades starting with the programme’s first year.
- Translation of your transcript of records in English if the original is not in Dutch, English, French or German.
- GPA (Grade Point Average) - if available. Your GPA is based on the weighted average of all grades from your programme.
- Language test results. Preferably an IELTS academic or TOEFL test.
If not yet obtained, we will consider your application anyhow. However, any offer made to you will be conditional. Please plan your test as soon as possible. We need the results ultimately by 10 August.
- Curriculum vitae in English.
- Essay or paper written in English. You are free to choose the subject of the essay. You may send a paper you have written during your Bachelor’s degree programme. The purpose is to give the programme’s selection committee an impression of your academic writing and analytical skills. The required length is 5-10 pages. The paper must be written in English. Do not forget to include a reference list.
- Motivation letter in English (1 to 2 pages).
- Copy of passport or ID card.

In view of the time needed to arrange visa and housing, applicants from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) need to apply ultimately 15 April. The ultimate deadline for EEA applicants is 15 May.
Finalise your application in the EUR Admission Portal
After you have enrolled in Studielink , you will receive an email with your ID and password to log in on the EUR Admission Portal. In this Portal you are invited to finalise your application by uploading the required documents and answering some additional questions. Once you have done this, you can submit your application.You can start working in the Portal, save your entries and use your login information to return to the Portal later.
We will only start processing your application after you have submitted it in the Portal (by clicking on the 'submit' button on the last page of the questionnaire).
Please be aware that automatically generated emails may end up in your spam or junk folder. Therefore, check these folders! If after enrolling in Studielink you do not receive an email from us with your login details for the Portal, please contact Erasmus Student Service Centre.
Once you have submitted your application in the EUR Admission Portal, we will check your application documents and let you know if anything is missing.
The programme’s admission committee will assess your application. Within 8 weeks after the applicable deadline, you will be informed by email whether or not you are admitted to the programme.
You can check your application status at any time by logging in on the EUR Admission Portal. Below you find the possible statuses and their meaning:
Before assessment of application
Not yet submitted
You have not yet confirmed your application by clicking on the ‘submit’ button at the bottom of the last page of the questionnaire. Please note: only submitted applications are processed!
You have submitted your application. We will let you know whether or not your file is complete within approximately two weeks.
After assessment of application
You are unconditionally admitted to the programme. Please indicate within three weeks in the EUR Admission Portal whether or not you accept the offer.
You are conditionally admitted to the programme. Please indicate within three weeks in the EUR Admission Portal whether or not you accept the offer.
Furthermore, you are requested to upload any missing documents (certified copy of diploma and transcript/language test results) in the EUR Admission Portal ultimately before 10 August. Once we have approved the documents, your status will change to ‘approved’.
You receive an email informing you about the reason(s) for rejection.
If you wish to cancel your application, please withdraw your enrolment in Studielink. Your application status in the Admissions Portal will automatically change to ‘cancelled’ as well.

- have arranged payment of your tuition fee;
- and uploaded your photograph.
If you are an international student, you also need to meet all immigration requirements.
- International students will receive information from our International Officer regarding visa requirements and practical matters such as housing and insurance. Information on these subjects can be found in our practical matters page.
- As of approximately mid-June, you will be able to arrange payment of tuition fees. You start with entering your payment details in Studielink (see your 'to do list' in Studielink). On our practical matters page you will find all the information you need regarding payment of your tuition fees. If you still have questions, please contact Erasmus Student Service Centre.
- You will receive a personal link, through which you can upload your passport photo. Please contact Erasmus Student Service Centre if you did not receive the link, but check your spam box first!
- The ultimate date for finalising your registration is 31 August, but please do not wait until the last minute!
Once all enrolment and registration requirements have been met, your enrolment certificate and student card will be sent to you if you have already filled out a Dutch address in Studielink.
If you have not yet changed the address in your home country to your Dutch address, you can pick up your student card at the office of the Programme Coordinator for Media Studies
It is advisable to arrive in Rotterdam well in time for the first lectures. Introductions such as ESN Introduction Days and the EUReka week are planned or mid-August and are a nice way to get settled before classes start.
In case you have changed your mind about studying in Rotterdam, please withdraw your application in Studielink and inform the Programme Coordinator for Media Studies.
You may also download your proof of enrolment from Osiris.
Once you have completed all the steps of admissions and enrolment you may want to download a proof of enrolment. A hard copy of it will be sent to your postal address (if you registered a Dutch address in Studielink) or ours. In the latter case you will receive the proof on enrolment together with your students card after arrival at the university.
Here is a step-by-step instruction of how you can download the proof of enrollment from Osiris.
- Log into Osiris with your ERNA id and password.
- Go to the page ‘Personal Details’.
- Next to the ‘Degree’ you will see the programme you are following.
- Below this, you will see ‘Status registration for degree programme’ in red.
- Click on this link.
- You will see ‘Status of enrollment’.
- Look at the part of ‘Academic year XXXX’.
- You will see the status of your registration.
- If all is well, you will see the link ‘Declaration of enrollment’.
- Click on this link.
- A PDF file will be downloaded with your proof of enrollment.
