Erik-Hans Klijn is professor at the Department of Public Administration of Erasmus University Rotterdam and visiting professor at the University of Birmingham (School of Government and Society).

Klijn is an international distinguished Public Administration scholar especially on the field of complex decision-making, (policy) networks and network management. His research the last 5-10 years has focused on several topics like:

1.the impact of network management on network performance. Klijn is an expert on the field of network management and the last 5 years both case study research (for instance a book about Dutch water projects in (2010 together with Arwin van Buuren and Jurian Edelenbos) and survey research (klijn 2010a) have been undertaken.  This research showed the crucial influence of network management for reaching outcomes. The last years also comparative research has been done in Spain (professor Tamyko Ysa and Vicenta Sierra), Taiwan (professor Evan Berman and professor Don Chen) (see Klijn et all 2015)
2. the role of trust in complex decision-making in networks. The last few years research has been done on how the level of trust in networks influences network performance. Both in case studies and in survey research (see klijn et al, 2010b) we showed that trust is a crucial variable in the performance of networks and that the level of trust is positively influenced by network management activities. International comparison confirms this for other countries (Klijn et al, 2016)
democratic legitimacy in complex decision-making; We looked at the way political institutions and various stakeholders are involved in this decision-making. We did this both form a normative point of view (relating this to discussion about  democracy and criteria for judging democratic legitimacy see Klijn and Skelcher, 2007) and from an empirical point of view (what is impact of involvement of various actors on network performance see: Klijn and Edelenbos, 2013). We found for instance that the involvement of stakeholders empirically is more important than the involvement of political institutions (political parties, city council etc.).
3. Research on Public Private Partnerships: We studied the influence of organizational forms and managerial effort on PPP performance (see Kort and Klijn, 2011; Steijn et all, 2011) and showed that contract characteristics have hardly any effect on (perceived) outcomes (Klijn and Koppenjan, 2016)
4. the influence of media attention on complex decision making in networks. There is a wide literature on mediatisation, thus how the logic of the media influences other societal spheres. But there is hardly any literature or research about the relation media and governance. Since 2010 we initiated research on this theme looking on the impact of media on complex governance processes. The first results show that intense media attention has negative influence of network performance (see Korthagen and Klijn 2014)and that network management mitigates negative media attention (Klijn, 2016)
5. In 2012 he wrote a book on branding in public management and governance with Jasper Eshuis. Together with Jasper Eshuis and Erik Braun he is involved in the National city marketing monitor which surveys city marketeers and is repeated every 2-3 year.  In 2013 the monitor is also performed in  Germany. Research (experiment design) also shows that public brands have impact on the trust people have in policy (see Karens et al, 2016)
