Philip Hans Franses Scholarship

The Philip Hans Franses scholarship is named after our emeritus Dean and eminent econometrician Philip Hans Franses. He has made important contributions to our School and to the field of econometrics. With this scholarship he hopes to inspire students to bring out the best in themselves and make a difference. The Philip Hans Franses scholarship is meant for bachelor students from a non-EEA country.

Requirements

To qualify for the Philip Hans Franses Scholarship, an applicant:

  • Must be a national of a country that is not part of the European Economic Area (EEA).
  • Must be selected for one of the following programmes*:
    • Bachelor International Econometrics and Operations Research
    • Bachelor International Economics and Business Economics
    • Double bachelor BSc2 in Econometrics and Economics
  • Must have registered for one of the above-mentioned bachelor programmes at Erasmus School of Economics in Studielink, as well as having submitted the application documents in the EUR Application Portal before 1 February 2026 in order to be considered for the scholarship. Students seeking admission to the international bachelor Economics and Business Economics have a deadline of 15 January 2026.
  • Must complete the mathematics entrance exam before 1 April 2026 with a sufficient result, if found math deficient during the bachelor application procedure. Students seeking admission to the international bachelor Economics and Business Economics must include the mathematics entrance exam in their application, if applicable. Please refer to the admission requirements of this programme for more information.
  • Must have achieved excellent study results during his/her secondary school education. This means an average grade of at least 8.0 on a grading scale of 1-10.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the financial need of this scholarship by including a detailed financial statement, in which the financial situation is explained as well as how the applicant is planning to support him/herself for the living expenses.
  • Must eventually be enrolled no later than 1 September of the academic year for which the scholarship is being requested.
  • Must have completed the immigration application. The deadline to complete the immigration procedure is 10 July. However, we instruct students with a scholarship application to send their application by May at the latest. Completing the immigration procedure entails having submitted the immigration application documents, as well as having transferred the tuition fee (minus the scholarship amount) + the deposit of living costs + the IND handling fee. * A selection offer is not required at the moment of application, however, only students with a selection offer will be considered for the Philip Hans Franses Scholarship.

Terms and conditions

The scholarship will only be awarded when the applicant will start with the same programme for which they have applied and for which the applicant has received admission. Switching programmes after being awarded a scholarship is not possible.

Upon acceptance of the scholarship, the student becomes an ambassador of the Philip Hans Franses Scholarship and Erasmus School of Economics, which includes supporting marketing initiatives.

There are 4 Philip Hans Franses Scholarships available. No rights can be derived when the above-mentioned minimum application criteria are met.  

Erasmus School of Economics reserves the right to withdraw the offer for the Philip Hans Franses Scholarship if the applicant fails to comply with the terms and conditions.

Amount and payment

This scholarship concerns a partial tuition fee waiver of 10.000 euro for the first year of the bachelor programme. Applicants who are awarded this waiver will therefore not directly receive a sum of money themselves.

The Philip Hans Franses Scholarship can be used as a reduction on tuition fee, as part of completing your immigration procedure. This means, should you be awarded with this scholarship, you are to transfer the remaining part of your tuition fee + deposit for the cost of living + IND handling fee before 10 July 2026.

Application procedure

To apply for the Philip Hans Franses Scholarship, you need to prepare the following documents: 

  • Motivation letter: stating your motivation to study at Erasmus School of Economics, showing evidence of being an excellent student and demonstrating why the scholarship would enlarge the opportunity to study at Erasmus School of Economics (max. two A4, font Arial, font size 11).
  • Financial statement: describing your financial situation and the reason and need to receive the scholarship (max. one A4, font Arial, font size 11).
  • Budget plan: overview explaining how you plan to finance your studies in case you will receive Philip Hans Franses Scholarship using this 'Budget plan' template.
  • Certified copy of your (most recent) academic transcript.
  • Certified statement from your educational institution confirming your obtained GPA. The GPA template document be used for this. You can also provide a statement provide by your home University, but it is important that this statement contains the same information as our standard statement.

Once you have gathered all the required information, you can submit your application online via Osiris student.

Application closed

The application will be open 1 December 2025 until 1 February 2026 (deadline: 1 February 23:59). Please note that scholarship applications received – or incomplete – after the deadline, will not be considered.

The applications will be reviewed after 1 February 2026.All applicants will be officially informed via e-mail about the outcome of their scholarship application by 13 March 2026, latest. If you are awarded the Philip Hans Franses Scholarship, you will receive further details in the nomination email.
