Deposits at War: How Outside Deposit Competition Affects Banks
My job market paper uses a unique historical setting to answer how competition for deposits from outside the banking sector affects banks’ deposit pricing, funding and lending. Historically, households and firms could deposit their money both at commercial banks and at the Dutch central bank. Using the outbreak of World War I as an exogenous shock, I show that banks more exposed to central bank competition increased their deposit rates more. In the following years, more exposed banks relied less on deposits for their funding and saw slower lending growth. This shows that a short-lived crisis can reshape how banks fund themselves long-term.
