Why this programme

Health Psychology

What does this study entail?

The master of Health Psychology focuses on using scientific knowledge and technology to promote health and well-being and trigger meaningful behaviour change. Our mission is to positively impact society by training the future generation of behaviour change specialists. You will learn to use psychological insights, evidence-based methods, and design thinking approaches to create innovative interventions and technological solutions (eHealth) for diverse communities.

For anyone interested in how to promote health and well-being, and influence behaviour

Erasmus University Rotterdam offers you one of the best master's programmes in Psychology in the Netherlands. This master track is for anyone with an interest in the psychology of behaviour change and the use of digital interventions to promote health and well-being, as well as influence behaviour. In this master's, you will learn:

  • How you can use psychological theories to design and evaluate innovative and effective interventions meeting the needs of diverse communities (e.g., youth, elderly, minority groups, patients).
  • How you can use digital technology to provide unique solutions for an increasingly complex society (e.g., e-health interventions).

Together with our experts, you will take on the challenge to analyse and solve complex behavioural and societal issues. You will start with exploring how psychological processes are linked to behaviours, and how we can further use these insights to design interventions that promote healthier and sustainable behaviours.

Become an all-round professional

This master's trains you to become an all-round professional who is able to apply scientific knowledge in practice. Graduates have an advantage because of their strong theoretical foundation and excellent research and practical skills.

Is this the right programme for you?

How do you motivate people to stay healthy, live meaningful lives, and actively participate in society? How do you help individuals achieve their goals? How can we use modern technology to better serve and fulfil the needs of our communities? In the master track of Health Psychology, we try to answer these sorts of questions.

In this master track, you will study the latest trends in designing impactful behaviour change interventions. You will gain knowledge about health psychology and behaviour change theories and techniques. You will discover how to use Design Thinking approaches and how persuasive strategies can be used to increase engagement with a (digital) intervention. You will also gain practical skills for designing, implementing, and evaluating interventions, including how to collaborate effectively with multiple stakeholders (e.g., citizens, health specialists, intervention designers, software developers, industry partners, policy makers, etc.). The research interests of this master track include behaviour change theories, health promotion and prevention, community-based and participatory research, persuasive system design, and the applied use of new technologies and research methods, such as artificial intelligence, wearables, and ecological momentary assessments.

Active education

The education in the master's is organised on a small scale. In addition to regular lectures, you will work in small groups. An integral part of the programme is the ability to familiarise yourself with the skills of a professional health psychologist and behaviour change specialist. These skills involve teamwork, project management, personal leadership, and research skills. In the second part of the programme, you will be given the opportunity to practice these skills during a practical and a research internship, and independently carry out your research leading to your graduation thesis.

The lecturers are not only brilliant academics, but also kind and understanding individuals who enriched my experience at the university.

My experience as part of the 2021-2022 Health Psychology course was truly fantastic!

The modules were thought provoking, educational and interesting. The vast majority of lectures were interactive and there was always room for questions, discussion and feedback. The lecturers were not only brilliant academics, but also kind and understanding individuals who enriched my experience at the university. The course was intensive at times, but we were given support all throughout. It was also very well set up for international students.

The course has led me to a health and sustainability Research Assistant opportunity within the Centre for Behaviour Change at University College London. I believe that the course prepared me well for working in academia, as it emphasised research skills. Moreover, the integration with digitalisation gave me a unique skillset which has been useful within the project I am now working on.

Going into the course, I was unsure what to expect. Looking back, I am filled with gratitude over what it gave me. I wish I could turn back time to experience it all over again!

Through this programme, I have learned what a huge difference effectively developed e-health technology can make.

I have always been passionate about helping those who need it most. With a background in psychology I was confident I could make a difference but not so sure how to do so without being a healthcare worker. I saw this program as an opportunity to learn new ways to make a difference in an increasingly digitized world and to use my expertise to support health care workers, and patients.

Through this programme, I have learned what a huge difference effectively developed e-health technology can make not only to health care workers and patients, but also to individuals who don’t have equal access to health care and especially to those who can benefit from preventative care (everyone!).
This programme has offered me many new inspirations for my career, as well as valuable real-life project experience, knowledge that can be transferred to various contexts, and fantastic mentors and friends.
