Optimising Dutch trains

The Econometric Institute has a long standing collaboration with Netherlands Railways (NS) with research projects on various topics. Examples are optimizing the timetable to improve service to the passengers, the development of new methods to support a more effective crew planning process and new algorithms to support the rescheduling of rolling stock and crew on the day of operations.

For all these challenges, researchers at the Econometric Institute develop new Operations Research techniques to tackle them. This has resulted in several methods that are applied on a daily basis within NS. For instance, during disruptions train drivers and guards are rescheduled with algorithms originating from research projects at the Econometric Institute. As a result, we improve the performance of the Dutch railway system, which is used by more than one million passengers per day. In this way, we positively impact the daily life of many Dutch commuters.

In 2008, NS and its academic partners were awarded by INFORMS with the Franz Edelman Award, also known as the Super Bowl of Operations Research.
