Netherlands Railways (NS), the largest railway operator in the Netherlands, regularly adapts its timetable and operations to accommodate peaks in passenger demand and special events. As a consequence, there may not be sufficient crew available for the ambitious timetable. Therefore, we consider a Crew Scheduling Problem in which it is allowed to cancel tasks.

To take into account the rolling stock circulation, tasks can only be cancelled through specific types of cancelling. Our proposed method builds on an existing model developed for the new template-based crew scheduling paradigm of NS.
We solve the LP-relaxation using column generation and find an integer solution using a diving heuristic. Preliminary results indicate that, for certain levels of crew shortage, a smaller proportion of tasks needs to be cancelled.
