Constant increase in traffic congestion for urban areas and the cost of expanding infrastructure as well as lack of space  in the last couple of decades, have increased congestion and pollution in cities.  Transport planners seek to find solutions to use the current infrastructure more efficiently.

Recent technology developments in Information and Communication Technology have provided a feasible platform to manage more effective resolutions for urban transportation systems. In this workshop, our invited speakers will talk about these advancements that make mobility services more efficient.

  • New shared and autonomous mobility services: from simulation to deployment

    Mobility services based on shared autonomous electrical vehicles promise to make transportation cheaper, safer, and faster, with fewer vehicles moving more people more efficiently. While much of the hype surrounding new mobility services is focused on autonomous vehicles, less attention is paid to challenge of how to turn these vehicles into value-added services that will enable the vehicles to work together as efficient fleets that can receive instructions, pick up travelers, and get them to their destinations at the right time.

    At Bestmile, we have developed the first mobility services platform that allows to easily provision, manage and optimize a wide range of new mobility services, covering autonomous shuttle, robotaxi, ride-sharing and micro-transit services. In this talk will show how this platform works and how it can be used to perform realistic simulations in the service design phase prior to deployment.

  • Harvesting mobility data for passenger-oriented and more flexible operations

    Public transport systems have been long dominated by supply-driven design and operations. The increasing availability of fleet management capabilities, passenger demand data and the trend towards introducing on-demand services, call for the development of more flexible operations that can better cater for the prevailing passenger flows. To this end, it is essential to perform network-wide state estimation of passenger flows and infer passenger travel patterns.

    Moreover, underlying determinants of travel choices can be then identified. In the talk, studies where these have been performed for fixed and flexible passenger services and then used as input for decisions ranging from network design, fleet dimensioning, capacity allocation and real-time control will be presented.

  • Marco Laumanns received his Diploma in computer science (1999) from the University of Dortmund, and his Ph.D.\ in information technology and electrical engineering (2003) as well as a Habilitation in operations research (2010) from the ETH Zurich. From 2010 to 2017 he was research staff member and project leader for transportation and operations research at IBM Research, where he worked on various research, development, and consulting engagements with large public transportation operators and agencies such as the Swiss Federal Railways, Deutsche Bahn, or LTA Singapore.

    He is a renowned expert in optimization and transportation, co-authored over 100 scientific articles with over 17000 citations, and serves on the executive committee of the Swiss Operations Research Society as well as the editorial board of the EURO Journal on Transportation and Logistics.

    As VP Research at Bestmile, Marco is member of the executive management team responsible for defining and executing the company's research agenda, covering data science, machine learning, simulation, optimization and control techniques for transportation systems design and management.

  • Oded Cats is Assistant Professor of Public Transport at Delft University of Technology. He co-directs the Smart Public Transport Lab at TU Delft, leading a research group that works closely with public transport authorities and operators. His research develops methods and models of multi-modal metropolitan passenger transport systems by combining advancements from behavioural sciences, operations research and complex network theory.

    His research contributions focus on the development of dynamic transit assignment models, the optimisation of passenger service operations, network robustness analysis and real-time control methods. He has developed an agent-based dynamic public transport operations and assignment models that has been used in a large range of research projects and real-world applications.

    He is the recipient of the prestigious personal European Research Council starting grant and is leading several European and national research projects. He is a member of several prestigious international committees including three TRB (Transportation Research Board) committees and PTV Scientific Advisory Board.

    He (co-)authored more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific publications in international journals and conference proceedings. He is the associate editor of the European Journal of Transport and Infrastructure Research (EJTIR).
