Masterclass by prof. Ien Ang | Co-designing Socio-Cultural Infrastructures for Inclusive Cities

Prof. Ien Ang is a leading scholar in cultural studies worldwide, with interdisciplinary work in many areas of the humanities and social sciences. Her work broadly addresses patterns of cultural flow and exchange in our globalised world, focusing on issues such as the formation of target groups and audiences, the politics of identity and difference, migration, ethnicity and multiculturalism, urban cultures, and issues of representation in contemporary cultural institutions.

The Masterclass will focus on various cutting-edge, collaborative research projects that aim to contribute to the development of more inclusive socio-cultural infrastructures in highly diverse cities such as Sydney and Rotterdam. The first part of the Masterclass will feature three presentations:

• Prof. Ien Ang will present her current research on The Collaborative Museum project in Sydney.
• Dr Amanda Brandellero and Prof. Martine van Selm will introduce the EU funded Bauhaus/Cultuur&Campus project in Rotterdam. 
• Dr Isabel Awad and Dr Jiska Engelbert will present their ongoing Vital Cities and Citizens’ projects, entitled Remapping Rotterdam and Reyeroord Plus.  

After a short break, the session will continue with a panel discussion chaired by Prof. Susanne Janssen, followed by discussion with the audience. 

Masterclass by prof. Ann Masten | Resilience of Youth

Prof. Ann Masten is a leading expert on resilience of youth. In her studies she promotes a multisystemic perspective of resilience, and underscores that not only the individual, but also the system around the individual, including the community and systems within the city, should be studied and used to optimize mental health and development of youth. 

The first part of the Masterclass will feature a keynote delivered by Prof. Ann Masten: Resilience in Development: Multisystem Perspectives in Theory and Action. This keynote is followed by a discussion. After a short break, the session will continue with presentations by Dr. Gabriele Mari and Dr. Annabel Vreeker. We end the Masterclass with a discussion chaired by Prof. Eveline Crone with discussant Prof. Loes Keijsers.

Honorary doctorates

Every year the Erasmus University awards one or two honorary doctorates to leading scientists from outside our university as a way of honoring their contributions to a specific field or to society in general. The 109th Dies Natalis of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) on Tuesday, 8 November 2022 will be dedicated to vital cities and citizens. During this year’s festive event the awards will go to Prof. Ien Ang and Prof. Ann Masten. They were nominated by Erasmus Initiative Vital Cities and Citizens, Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences and Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication.
