Enactivism

14th meeting of the Enactivism Study Group of the OZSW

Workshop on metalanguage, self-reflection, and content

Date:  Tuesday 23 May 2017
Time:  13:00 – 16:50 hours
Room: H5-32
Place:  Erasmus University Rotterdam,
            Burgemeester Oudlaan 50,
            Tinbergen-Gebouw, 5th floor.

13:00 – 13:01 Word of welcome

13:01 – 14:10 Talbot Taylor (William & Mary) – The Metalinguistic Emergence of Language

Wittgenstein’s Blue Book opens with the recommendation that, in approaching the general question ‘What is the meaning of a word?’, we should ask what an explanation of the meaning of a word looks like.  Within contemporary enactive and ecological approaches to ‘higher’ cognition and skilled intentionality, there is increasing attention given to questions concerning how a child becomes someone, for example, whose vocalizations have particular meanings or refer to past events and nonexistent objects, who understands what others’ utterances mean, and who knows what it is for an utterance to be true or false and what it is to do (or not do) what someone says.  Following Wittgenstein’s recommendation and drawing on illustrative diary data, I will explore the proposal that, in addressing such questions about the emergence of language in ontogeny, we should ‘ask’ what children’s development of metalinguistic skills ‘looks like’.

14:10 – 14:30 Coffee break

14:30 – 15:30 Jasper van den Herik (EUR) – The Ontogenetic Origins of Content

I argue that content-sensitivity stems from a child’s growing metalinguistic competence, which allows her to construe verbal responses of other people as expressions of their perspective on the world. This realisation leads to a novel kind of reflexivity: as her attention is educated to the affordances of linguistic behaviour, she becomes able to relate to other people’s relation to the world, and ultimately, to herself as a subject of a perspective on the world.

15:30 – 15:50 Coffee break

15:50 – 16:50 Julian Kiverstein (UvA) – Self-reflection and the affordances of language

I will explore how reflective capacities in humans - capacities for explicit self-conscious reflection are tied to language. I will argue that the capacity for self-reflection has its roots in meta-linguistic capacities - the affordances language offers for talking about talking.

16:50 drinks at Erasmus Paviljoen
