Back to overview

Jess Bier (1980) is an assistant professor of urban sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Previously, she was a postdoctoral researcher in the ERC-Funded Monitoring Modernity research project headed by Willem Schinkel.

Dr. Bier is a social theorist who engages with the geographies of scientific and technical knowledge. Her work is situated at the confluence of Science and Technology Studies (STS), critical geography, and postcolonial theory. In her postodc research, she analyzed the changing spatialities of efforts to monitor international financial flows during the current economic crisis. In her first book, Mapping Israel, Mapping Palestine, she analyzes how segregated landscapes have shaped digital cartography in Jerusalem and the West Bank since 1967.

Dr. Bier’s publication list is also available on Google Scholar. Full text of her publications can be downloaded from Academia.edu. In 2013, a chapter of her dissertation received a prize from the Middle East Section of the American Anthropological Association (AAA). Her work has been funded in part by the Dutch National Research School for Science, Technology, and Modern Culture (WTMC), the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), and the Association of American Geographers (AAG).
