On Wednesday 12 May 2021, J.M. Colijn will defend her PhD dissertation, entitled: ‘Age-related Macular Degeneration: Genetic Epidemiologic findings from large European studies’.

During this project we show that the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is going to rise in the next 20 years due to the aging population in Europe. We show that progression of the disease is highly variable; if a person has late stage disease in one eye 27 to 68% develops late stage disease in the other eye within 5 years. Also the endstage, geographic atrophy, has highly variable progression with round lesions growing slowest. The genetic susceptibility for AMD is high in Europe and lipid metabolism seems to play a role. Adhering to a Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of developing AMD.

Due to corona, the PhD defences do not take place publicly in the usual way in the Senate Hall or in the Professor Andries Querido Room. The candidates will defend their dissertation either in a small group or online.
