The Academic Outreach Programme (AOP) of IDEA Center presents: a brand new Taaltrip (Language Trip) for primary school children. The AOP promotes equitable access to (our) university for historically underrepresented students. One of the approaches, especially for young children, is to offer an accessible introduction to the university environment, where we introduce children to the physical environment (our campus), but also vocabulary/terminology/stories surrounding university (life).
Our AOP and JINC are joining forces in creating a brand-new Taaltrip (Language Trip) for primary school children (grades 5 and 6). AOP and JINC are committed to building a society in which everyone can thrive, with equitable opportunities available to all.
With the project Taaltrip, primary school children are welcomed in a new environment and get acquainted with the vocabulary that is related to that environment. This co-created Taaltrip will offer an accessible introduction to our university, for kids from all parts of the city of Rotterdam. We strive to make university (campus exploration and university-themed vocabulary) more easily accessible and increase the (prospective) sense of belonging. As such, we aim to promote equitable access to our university.
Because our campus becomes an official theme, many of the Rotterdam schools affiliated with JINC will be able to choose the EUR TaalTrip at the beginning of each school year.
Pilot of the Taaltrip
In the first half of 2024 we are developing this new Taaltrip. We are creating educational materials for children, teacher materials for lessons around the theme ‘campus’, an educational game, and the campus tour: the actual Taaltrip. The lessons and the game will be on school, the Taaltrip will be on campus.
On Thursday, June 20, we will present the pilot of this special Taaltrip on campus Woudestein. We will welcome 40 primary school pupils (group 6A and 6B) of OBS De Kameleon (Rotterdam-Zuid) on our campus for this pilot; they will be the first pupils ever to do this Taaltrip!
