Open Science & Open Access are buzzwords in the present day of academic publishing. While working towards freely accessible academic output, the biggest hurdle is the paywall that academics and the public encounter.

Learn all about this paywall and how to deal with it. Join the event: Open Access - The Business of Scholarship on Tuesday October 9th from 14:00 to 17.00 hrs.

Key notes

  • Pearl Dykstra, chair of empirical sociology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, will relate her concerns on open access to publications and data. She will also address the dilemmas young researchers face and highlights the role of the Library in making research available to everyone.

  • Robert-Jan Smits, recently appointed as the Open Access Envoy of the European Commission, will unfold his Plan S to accelerate the transition to full and immediate Open Access to scientific publications. This plan was presented on 4 September 2018.

  • Jason Schmitt, American documentary maker of Paywall the Movie, focuses on the necessity of open access for research and science progress.

European premiere:  Paywall: The Business of Scholarship

The documentary questions the rationale behind the enormous amount of money that is being earned by for-profit academic publishers, whose profit margins are often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google.

(The film will be shown to the United Nations General Assembly shortly after this Erasmus event.)
