Gay pride is about the self-affirmation, emancipation, equality, and increased visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community. In the USA in the sixties, it was common for police to raid gay bars. By the end of the sixties, the LGBTQIA+ community fought back against police at the Stonewall Inn in New York. These Stonewall riots were seen as the first organized fight for equal rights for LGBTQIA+ people. Since then, as a reaction to these riots, pride events have happened all across the world.
