University ceremonies are the academic events that belong to the traditions of Erasmus University Rotterdam:
- the opening of the academic year: every year on the first Monday of September
- the Dies Natalis: the anniversary of the Erasmus University Rotterdam on 8 November
- the Mandeville lecture, named after the Rotterdam-born philosopher and physician Bernard Mandeville (1670-1733). From 2016, an honorary doctorate from the Erasmus University Rotterdam has been attached to this. The honorary doctor receives the kappa with a pin and a bull. Up to and including 2015, the lecture had the social equivalent of an honorary doctorate, as a token of appreciation for the great social merits of a person from home or abroad.
The lecture is an initiative of the Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Rotterdam business community (Club Rotterdam) and the Erasmus Trust Fund.
